L yric mezzo Julie Biggs has performed in many operas and musicals including recent appearances with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera Company (as Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus); the Western Plains Opera Company (as Public Opinion in Orpheus in the Underworld and Cherubino in the Marriage of Figaro); the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Winnipeg (as Ella in Patience); and the Little Opera Company (as the Snow Queen and the Rose in Snow Queen, as Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Maggie in Della's Gift). Julie has given many concerts and recitals in Canada, the United States and abroad. She has performed with the Minot Symphony (Minot, North Dakota); the Ost-West Symphony (Altenberg,Germany), the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra (Bismarck, N.D.), Pan-American Games (Winnipeg); the International Peace Gardens, the Evanston Honor Concert Series (Illinois), Manitoba Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, Women Business Owners' of Manitoba Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, the Winnipeg German Society, Folklorama; in fundraising efforts for Red River Flood Relief, Manitoba Osteoporosis Society, and the Grace Hospital Foundation. In 1999, Julie completed her Master of Music in Voice and Opera Studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While at Northwestern she studied privately with Mignon Dunn. In 1998 Julie attended the summer program at the International Institute of the Vocal Arts (IIVA) in Chiari, Italy. In 1995 she attended the Ost-West Musik Akademie in Altenberg, Germany where she studied with Arturo Sergi. In 1993, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education from Minot State University in North Dakota. Julie released her debut album My Loving Days (Amorosi miei giorni) in January 2000. This recording was nominated for a Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Classical Recording. Julie was invited to perform at the awards show and sang the title track from her album. In 1997, Julie opened her private studio where she began teaching voice and piano. In 2002, she joined the faculty at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts. In addition to performing, Julie has become a popular adjudicator and vocal coach. Julie is an active member of the Association of Manitoba Arts Festivals (AMAF) and adjudicates throughout the province. Julie has been a longtime Manitoba Audio Recording Industry Association (MARIA) member and has judged the classical music categories of the Western Canadian Music Awards since the creation of the WCMA. This past fall Julie gave a workshop at the WCMA 2006 conference on the basics of singing and vocal health, and was the moderator for a discussion panel entitled Femtastic - powerful women in the music industry and the challenges they face. Julie was also a judge for the classical vocal category of the 2007 Juno Awards. |
